Fulbright Alumni Experience: University of Novi Sad, Serbia; 2017-2018
Having a visceral “on the ground” residence in Novi Sad, Serbia was requisite for cultural understanding (via teaching) and for the writing of my book. I now have connections with students and faculty at the University of Novi Sad, the University of Belgrade, and the University of Sarajevo, which allows for a broadening of international dialogues. I provide continued
links with The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to help with more student and professorial exchanges. Senator Fulbright’s words are true especially today: “The essence of intercultural education is the acquisition of empathy—the ability to see the world as others see it, and to allow for the possibility that others may see something we have failed to see, or may see it more accurately. The simple purpose . . . is to erode the culturally rooted mistrust that sets nations against one another.”
