Steve Duke, Dawne Curry, Amy Wendling, and Amy Forss
Concerning our Fulbright coffee events:
- October event in Lincoln – Ken coordinated two coffee events—9 people attended for the first, and 2 for the second. Thank you, Ken!
- Future dates in Lincoln: Saturday Nov 12, Saturday December 10—Steve is planning on these dates for future coffees. Wants to get visiting Fulbright and also the local Fulbright in Nebraska. Thinks needs to have other times besides the morning. Wants us to consider what other ways we can bring together more Fulbright her and those who are visiting in Nebraska.
- Amy Forss reported that she is still having issues accessing our Fulbright website to post our minutes from the last two months. She’s working on it!
- Omaha – Amy Wendling is willing to help coordinate a date in Omaha. Tentative date is Monday November 28 from 9-10:30 am. Amy W is concerned about parking at UNO. Steve will not be in town for the event. Amy W suggested Zen Coffee near Dodge Street and Creighton campus. Steve let Amy W know there’s enough money for $10 per person for a coffee and doughnut. She says the venue is delicious and fun. Amy F said she will assist Amy W at the coffee meeting. Steve said he has learned there are lots of Fulbright who have not joined a Fulbright chapter. He hopes to contact them and encourage to events like this coffee.
- Omaha – is anyone else willing to coordinate a meeting in December with Fulbright Visiting Scholars who are currently at UNO and UNMC? Amy Forss said she will do a meeting in December—white elephant exchange. Steve reminded her of the $10 allowance per person. Might want to contact Chris Allen and Lucy. Steve said he will email Chris and copy Amy on it.
- Activities: Fulbright Forums
- Fall 2022
- Spring 2023 (featuring Amelia Montes) Dawne said Amelia still planning on spring for her presentation—there’s concern with COVID in the winter. Amy W said perhaps we can do the presentation via zoom and that way no matter what Amelia can be at her level of comfort. Steve said our chapter has requested funds for food to do a mini reception for Amelia’s event. He is thinking approximately $600-700 dollars would provide a good amount of food. Amy W suggested we pick a venue in Lincoln since Amelia will be in Lincoln. Steve suggested scheduling Amelia’s session after spring break. Dawne will not be available during the spring as she’ll be on sabbatical in South Africa. Amelia said she would prefer in early December either on the 5th, 7th or 9th. We discussed and decided on December 8 (Thursday)—most likely in the late afternoon or early evening at either 6:30 or 7:00 pm. Steve asked Dawne where to have Amelia speak. Dawne asked for clarification on the session participation size—Steve though between 40-50. Amelia has a following in her English department. Dawne suggested contacting the Landan Center.
- Activities: Need to schedule a date for a UNO hockey game in December. Steve mentioned there are UNO games on Friday and Saturday evenings in the first two weeks of December.
- Submitting event reports to the Fulbright Association. Steve said he will work on Ken to write up reports for the two coffees Ken hosted. Steve said Ken spent less than $100. Steve says we are doing well financially with spending the grant money.
- Ken coordinated the September 2022 event in Lincoln, cost was $63.05
- Ken coordinated the October 2022 event in Lincoln, cost was $25.39
- Selecting or appointing an Advocacy Director for our chapter (this was suggested by the Fulbright Association)—confused about what is the advocacy for concerning Fulbright? Steven thinks the advocacy is the Fulbright program. Steve said he needs more information but in the meantime, we can contact Fulbrighters to ask. Amy F will contact Meghan Winchell and ask if she is interested. The National office wants that person to set up two meetings in our area in Spring 2023, in coordination with the National office. Selection requested by December 1, 2022.
